A honeymoon in Italy – Part 2 – Lake Garda

So the second stop on our amazing honeymoon in Italy (after Venice), was the enchanting Lake Garda. We had 6 nights based in Sirmione, which is a picturesque Medieval town centred around the Castello Scaligero and is located on a peninsula at the bottom of Lake Garda.

There are two parts to Sirmione; the newer area leading from Desenzano into the old town – this is more modern, with slightly cheaper hotels and restaurants and also houses the markets in Summer. The second part is the old town, which can only be reached by entering the castle walls and spreads right to the end of the peninsula. This is where we stayed and if your budget allows, I highly recommend staying inside the castle walls. It is far prettier, you’re within a stones-throw from all the best bars, restaurants and shops and you have the prettiest views across the Lake.

The town is alive and buzzing during the day as is popular with tourists across the Lake, but is quieter in the evening when day tourists get the last boat back to their respective towns.

A honeymoon in Italy – Part 1 – Venice

We had the most wonderful honeymoon in Italy, in May this year. It sounds totally corny but it was everything we had dreamed of. The sun was shining (almost continually), the water was glistening, the food was outstanding and the Prosecco was flowing.

When picking a honeymoon destination, all the usual hot spots came up for discussion; The Maldeves, USA, The Bahamas, The Carribbean etc etc. All of which would have been amazing I’m sure. However, we wanted a honeymoon full of culture, food and relaxation and Italy came to mind. It also has the added benefit of being just a 2 hr 1o min flight away. We both like to relax, chill and sunbathe on holiday, but both also get bored quite quickly, so wanted somewhere with plenty of towns to visit and experiences to have away from the pool. Italy was the best honeymoon choice EVER!

Italian food equals yum. Part 2

So I’ve already begun to tell you about my food experiences whilst on honeymoon in Italy in a previous post here. But there was oh so much more Italian food to talk about!

Aside from the beautiful trattorias, osterias and bars that we frequented, we also cooked our own food and even indulged in an authentic Tuscan cookery course. This was a definite high-light of our trip and something I’d highly recommend to those of you that are looking for something a bit different to do and something that involves a real piece of Italy. A Tuscan cook comes to your house or apartment, laden with the freshest of local ingredients and helps you cook your own 4-course Tuscan meal, before serving you whilst you devour every last bit!

Our cookery course was booked through Arianna and friends, a local Tuscan tour operator that specialises in food and wine tours and experiences. They pride themselves on taking things slow, so you can really indulge and take-in the real Italy. Arianna and her friends (one of whom was our cook, Veronica) are a wonderfully friendly bunch of people, who will guide you through some Italian experiences personally, giving you that special experience that you’d want on a holiday or honeymoon. We really are glad we met them and will definitely be calling on them when we’re back in Tuscany.
